Not feeling heard during labour can create fear, stress, or a sense of losing control. Labour is one of the most vulnerable experiences in life, and clear communication with your care team is essential. You deserve to feel that your voice matters — even in the middle of strong contractions.
Misunderstandings can happen when many things occur at once. Staff may be focused on clinical tasks while you are managing intense sensations, making communication harder. But your feelings and boundaries remain important. If something feels wrong, too painful, or confusing, it is absolutely okay to say so.
You can ask someone to repeat what they said or ask the midwife to pause and explain the reason for a procedure. You have the right to request a different position, ask for pain relief, decline something, or simply say you need more support.
If communication feels difficult, your partner or support person can help speak on your behalf. Your midwife wants to collaborate with you — sometimes she just needs a clear signal of what you need in that moment.
Alma’s tips

• You can decline procedures you don’t feel ready for.
• Let your partner or support person speak for you if talking is hard.
