During weeks 6–7, the embryo is developing rapidly and begins to take on more recognizable features. It is now about 5–10 millimeters long, similar in size to a small grain of rice or a blueberry. The heart is beating regularly, and the circulatory system is active. If an early ultrasound is performed, you may even see the heartbeat as a flickering point – though it is still too early to hear it.

The face is beginning to form, with tiny indentations where the eyes, nose, and ears will develop. Arms and legs start as small buds, which will later grow into limbs with hands and feet. The nervous system is forming quickly, and the brain is growing at an incredible speed – producing hundreds of new cells every minute.

Hormone levels continue to rise, which may cause nausea, increased fatigue, swollen abdomen, or breast tenderness. Some may experience a stronger sense of smell or emotional shifts. It can feel strange that something so significant is happening when the embryo is still so small – but the body is working constantly to protect and support this early development.

Alma’s tips 🌿

  • Nausea is common – try small, frequent snacks to ease symptoms.

  • If fatigue feels overwhelming, rest. Your body is working hard.

  • Take folic acid daily if you haven’t already – it’s vital for brain development.

  • It’s normal to feel worried. Write down your questions for your midwife when the time comes.
