In weeks 39–40, the baby is fully developed for life outside the womb. Growth in size slows down, and the focus is now on maturing and preserving energy. Space in the uterus is limited, which means movements often feel different. They may feel like pressure, shifting, or slow rolling motions. You should feel movements every day, in the way that is normal for your baby, even if they are no longer large or frequent.
The baby continues to practice stretching and bending and remains active, even with less room. The skin is more resilient, and the body is now better prepared to manage contact and temperature after birth. Most changes at this stage are internal rather than visible.
For the pregnant person, the body may feel slower and heavier. Breathing can be affected by the position of the uterus, and rest may occur in shorter periods. The body is working to carry, support, and complete the pregnancy, even when it is not always noticeable.
This is the final stage of pregnancy, where the body focuses less on building and more on stabilizing and completing. Much of this work happens quietly, even when it cannot be seen or felt.
