During weeks 21–23, the fetus continues to grow at a steady pace. The body becomes more proportional, and movements become both clearer and more varied. The fetus practices stretching, turning the body, and making gentle motions with arms and legs. There is still plenty of space to move, which means it can change position several times a day.

Reflexes continue to develop, and the fetus can slowly practice grasping, stretching, and even resting in moments of stillness. This does not mean awareness, but rather that the body is rehearsing for life after birth.

For the pregnant person, this may be a time when movements are felt more often, especially if they have been felt before. Movements can feel like soft bumps, light pressure, or gentle fluttering inside. It is still normal to not feel movement every day at this stage. Some may also start to feel changes in the back, hips, or joints as the body adjusts.

The belly becomes rounder and may feel heavier. The skin may stretch and sometimes feel itchy — this is the body’s way of adapting to the growing uterus. This period can also be when pregnancy feels more noticeable, both physically and emotionally — even though the experience can vary greatly.

Alma’s tips 🌿

  • It is normal to feel movement sometimes but not always at this stage.

  • You can moisturize your skin if it feels tight, but most changes come from within.

  • Rest when the body feels heavy, but gentle movement can also be helpful.

  • You don’t need to understand everything — your body is doing much of the work on its own.
