When your period starts, it’s completely normal to feel unsure about the different products and which one might be right for you. Your body is changing, your cycle may be irregular at first, and it can feel like a lot to handle. The most important thing to know is that there is no “correct” choice. It’s about what feels safe, comfortable and simple for you.

Many teenagers start with pads because they’re easy to understand and use. They sit in your underwear and absorb the blood without needing to put anything inside the body. This can feel reassuring in the beginning when everything is still new. Tampons can be helpful if you want to swim or play sports, but there is absolutely no pressure to use them until you feel ready. There are also menstrual cups and reusable liners, and many people discover those later on when they’ve gotten to know their period better.

During puberty, your flow can vary a lot from day to day. Some days you might only need something light, and other days you’ll need more absorbency. This doesn’t mean anything is wrong. Your body is learning its rhythm, and it’s normal for it to take time.

Many teenagers worry about leaking. It’s incredibly common in the beginning and doesn’t mean you’ve done anything wrong. It takes a few cycles to understand how your own body bleeds. With time, you’ll find the combination of products that feels right for you.

Alma’s Tips

You’re not expected to know everything at once. Try things out, ask questions if you want to, and let yourself learn at your own pace. What matters most is that you feel comfortable and safe. If something leaks or doesn’t feel right, that’s not a failure — it’s just your body telling you to try something different. And if you ever want to talk about period products or how your cycle works, I’m here for you. I’ll help you figure it out in a way that feels calm and supportive.
