Brown discharge in early pregnancy is very common and usually harmless. The brown color comes from old blood leaving the uterus slowly. It often happens because the uterine wall is changing and stretching as pregnancy begins, or from small blood vessels breaking after sex or physical activity.
This is a normal part of your body’s adjustment. The discharge is typically light and odorless. If it becomes bright red, heavy, or you have pain, contact your midwife or maternity emergency care. Most people who experience brown discharge go on to have a completely normal pregnancy.
You can use a panty liner if it feels more comfortable, but avoid tampons or menstrual cups. Rest if you feel worried, and remember that light spotting is common in early pregnancy.
Alma’s tips:
• Brown discharge usually means old blood – not miscarriage.
• Rest and observe if it’s light and you feel well.
• Seek care if it turns red, heavy, or painful.
