Not feeling happy about being pregnant is more common than people think. Society often talks about joy and excitement, but not everyone feels that way. For some, pregnancy brings worry, exhaustion, or confusion instead of happiness. It doesn’t mean you won’t bond with your baby.

Hormones play a role, but so do life circumstances, relationships, and past experiences. If the pregnancy was unexpected, or if you’ve gone through hard times, mixed emotions are natural.

The most important thing is to talk about it. You don’t have to pretend to be happy for others. Midwives are used to hearing all kinds of feelings and can help you find support if things feel heavy.

Alma’s tips:

  • • You don’t have to feel joyful all the time.

  • • Talk about how you feel — naming emotions helps.

  • • Give yourself time — feelings grow at their own pace.
