IVF, or in vitro fertilization, is a fertility treatment where eggs are collected from the ovaries and fertilized with sperm outside the body. The fertilized egg (embryo) is then transferred back into the uterus.

The treatment involves several steps. First, hormone medication is used to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple mature eggs. Once ready, the eggs are collected in a short procedure under light sedation. In the lab, they’re fertilized with sperm, and a few days later, one or more embryos are placed back into the uterus.

The process can be emotionally demanding, especially if multiple attempts are needed. Having emotional support and caring for your mental wellbeing are just as important as the medical part.

Alma’s tips:

  • Be open about how you’re feeling — with healthcare staff and loved ones.

  • It’s normal for IVF to take several rounds before success.

  • Don’t hesitate to ask for counseling — you’re not alone.
