Fertility changes with age — for both women and men — but it’s more noticeable for those with ovaries. Around the age of 30, the number and quality of eggs begin to decline gradually. After 35, it can become more difficult to conceive, and after 40, the chances decrease further, although pregnancy is still possible for many.
For men, fertility also changes with age but more slowly. Sperm quality may decline, but fertility often remains for longer. However, the risk of miscarriage and some complications increases for both partners as they get older.
It’s helpful to understand how age affects the body, but try not to feel pressured. Many people become parents later in life, sometimes with medical support.
Alma’s tips:
Think about what timing feels right for you — not what others expect.
If you’re unsure, talk to a midwife or doctor about your options.
