A partner’s role during labour is essential, regardless of whether this is the first birth or not. Support is not about “doing it right,” but about creating safety, calm, and continuity. For the birthing person, a grounded and reassuring partner can significantly shape the experience.

During early labour, the partner can help time contractions, ensure hydration and nutrition, and encourage rest. Offering food, drinks, massage, warmth, or joining in gentle walks can make a big difference. Many birthing people find that their partner’s voice and calm presence provide powerful reassurance.

In the delivery room, the partner continues to support by helping with position changes, holding hands, massaging the lower back, applying counterpressure, managing lighting, and keeping the atmosphere peaceful. The partner can also communicate with staff, allowing the birthing person to stay focused inward.

Reminding about breathing, supporting rest between contractions, and offering encouraging words can ease stress and pain perception. No advanced techniques are required — presence is the most important tool.

It is normal for partners to feel unsure. Every labour is different, and the partner’s role naturally evolves throughout the process.
