It’s very common to experience challenges in the beginning, and it doesn’t mean anything is wrong. Your body and your baby are learning together. The most common issues are:

Sore or cracked nipples:

Often caused by a shallow latch. Sharp or ongoing pain is not normal.

Difficulty latching:

This may happen if the baby is tired, the labour was fast, muscles are tense, or the baby is very small.

Engorgement or blocked ducts:

The breast may feel hard, warm, or tender if it’s overly full or not emptied enough.

Worry about whether baby gets enough:

Very common — but diaper output and weight checks give clearer answers than how the breast feels.

Midwives and lactation consultants can support you with technique and comfort. You never have to navigate this on your own.

🌿 Alma’s tips

• Pain with every latch is a signal — ask for help right away.

• Try adjusting your position or allow baby to relatch.

• Watch diaper output and baby’s energy — not just how “full” your breasts feel.

• This is a learning process for both of you. Be kind to yourself.
