By weeks 12–14, the fetus measures around 6–9 centimeters – roughly the size of a lime or small egg. It now starts to look more like a small human. Facial features are becoming more defined – the nose, mouth, and ears are visible, and the eyelids have formed. The fetus can move its arms and legs, yawn, swallow amniotic fluid, and may even suck its thumb. Fingers and toes are now fully separated and have tiny nail buds.
Internally, the organs continue to mature and practice their functions. The heart is actively working, and blood circulation becomes more stable. The lungs develop further, and the fetus practices breathing movements by drawing in amniotic fluid. The brain is rapidly growing and sending signals that enable small reflex movements.
For the pregnant person, nausea may gradually ease as hormone levels stabilize, and energy may slowly return. Some may still feel tired, emotional, or experience mild headaches as the blood volume increases. The growing uterus may now be felt as a small firm bump just above the pubic bone.
Emotionally, pregnancy may start to feel more real – even if the belly is still small. It is common to feel both anticipation and worry, and both are normal parts of the experience.
Alma’s tips 🌿
- If nausea starts to lessen, focus on restoring energy with nourishing food.
Drink water regularly – your blood volume increases during this period.
You don’t need to “feel pregnant” for the pregnancy to be real.
Begin thinking about questions you’d like to ask at your next midwife visit.
