Many teenagers spend much of the day sitting still. Lessons, homework, and time spent using computers or mobile phones often reduce opportunities for movement. However, you do not need intense exercise every day to support your health. From a wellness perspective, every movement counts, and small periods of activity throughout the day can make a meaningful difference.
The human body is designed to move. Standing up, taking a short walk, or choosing the stairs activates your muscles, joints, and circulation. Many people also find that they feel more alert and are able to concentrate better after moving for a few minutes. This makes everyday movement a valuable complement to physical education classes or organised exercise.
There are many simple ways to include more movement during a typical school day. If possible, walk or cycle part of the way to school. During breaks, take a short walk with a friend instead of remaining seated. If you are studying for long periods at home, stand up, stretch, or walk around for a few minutes between study sessions.
From a wellness perspective, physical activity is not about competing or comparing yourself with others. It is about giving your body the conditions it needs to function well every day. Regular movement works together with healthy sleep, balanced nutrition, and recovery to support long-term health. The most important thing is finding ways to move that fit naturally into your daily routine.
Remember that every movement matters. You do not have to become out of breath or complete a workout for your body to benefit. Small choices throughout the day can improve your well-being and give your body a healthy break from prolonged sitting.
Things to Keep in Mind

Alma’s Tip
As a midwife, I often remind young people that the body benefits from moving a little and often. You do not need to make major changes. Just a few extra minutes of movement throughout the day can support both your body and your mind while giving you more energy.
