Nitrous oxide is a mixture of oxygen and nitrous gas that you inhale through a mask or mouthpiece. It does not remove pain completely but helps make contractions more manageable and reduces tension and anxiety. The effect comes on quickly and fades just as fast when you stop inhaling, allowing you to use it only during contractions.
People often describe the sensation as light-headedness, relaxation, or a “floaty” feeling. You remain fully awake and in control. Nitrous oxide is commonly used during the dilation phase and can be combined with other methods.
🌿 Alma’s tips
• Start inhaling just before the contraction builds.
• Keep your breathing slow and steady — that gives the best effect.
• If you feel nauseous, tell your midwife — the dose can be adjusted.
