Sterile water injections are small injections of sterile water placed just under the skin, usually on the lower back. They can provide highly effective relief for back-dominant labour pain. The relief comes quickly and may last 30–90 minutes. The effect works by interrupting pain signals and reducing the perception of deeper discomfort.
The benefits are that this method is drug-free, does not affect the baby, and can be repeated. The main drawback is that the injection stings intensely for a few seconds before the relief begins.
🌿 Alma’s tips
• Focus on your breathing during the injection — the sting is brief.
• This is a great option if you prefer to avoid medication.
• Let your midwife know if the relief fades — the treatment can be repeated.
