Toward the end of pregnancy, estrogen levels rise. Estrogen increases blood flow to the uterus and makes the uterine muscle more responsive to oxytocin. It also stimulates prostaglandin production, which softens the cervix. Higher estrogen levels help the body transition from pregnancy mode to birth mode, where contractions become stronger and more coordinated.
Alma’s tips
• Notice what helps your body relax — warmth, a shower, or gentle movement.
• Increased discharge is normal as estrogen rises.
• Upright or rocking positions may help the baby settle deeper into the pelvis as your body responds to estrogen.
