Induction of labour means that labour is started using medical methods. It is used when pregnancy should not continue further, or when there is a clinical reason to initiate the birth process. Induction may be considered when pregnancy extends beyond the expected date or when certain conditions affect the pregnant person, the fetus or the placenta. The decision is made by a doctor based on clinical assessment.
Before induction, the cervix, fetal position and pregnancy conditions are assessed. The condition of the cervix determines which method is used. If the cervix is not yet ready, medication or a balloon catheter may be used to help initiate the process. If the cervix is more prepared, the membranes may be ruptured, or contractions may be supported with medication. The method is chosen according to the circumstances at that time.
Induction does not mean that labour starts immediately, but that the process is initiated. The length of time varies, and assessment continues as the process develops. It is used when there is a medical reason not to wait for natural onset.
