LGV (lymphogranuloma venereum) is caused by a specific strain of the chlamydia bacteria. It is uncommon in Sweden but does occur, especially after unprotected anal sex. LGV often begins with a tiny sore that goes unnoticed, followed by a second phase with fever, swollen lymph nodes, and pain.

As the infection progresses, symptoms may include fatigue, rectal discharge, pain during bowel movements, or a feeling of pressure in the pelvic area. Because LGV resembles many other conditions, it is often mistaken for something else. Testing is essential, and treatment requires a longer antibiotic course than ordinary chlamydia.

Condoms provide excellent protection — against LGV, most other STIs, and unplanned pregnancy. During anal sex, condoms are especially important because the lining of the rectum is more fragile.

You can always visit your youth clinic for free condoms, testing, and support. They are there for you without judgment.
