Molluscum contagiosum is a harmless viral skin infection that causes small, shiny, dome-shaped bumps with a tiny dimple in the center. Among children it often spreads during play, but among teenagers it can also spread through sexual contact, simply because skin touches skin. It has nothing to do with hygiene — anyone can get it, no matter how clean they are.

The bumps may appear in the genital area, on the stomach, thighs, or anywhere skin has rubbed against another person’s skin. Many teens have no symptoms at all, but some may experience itching, irritation, or redness. Scratching or picking at the bumps makes them spread more easily, because the virus travels from your nails to new areas of skin.

Molluscum usually goes away on its own, but it can take several months or even a year. If the bumps spread quickly, become irritated, or appear in the genital area, treatment may help. Options include freezing the bumps, removing the core, or simply waiting and monitoring. We decide together what feels right for you and your body.

Condoms offer only partial protection, because molluscum spreads through skin outside the area a condom covers. Still, using a condom is always a good idea — it’s the best protection against most sexually transmitted infections and also helps prevent unplanned pregnancy. If the bumps are in an area that rubs against a partner, it’s best to avoid sex until they have healed or can be completely covered.

You can always visit your local youth clinic for testing, advice, free condoms, and support. They are there for you, no matter the question.
