Some people are simply more attuned. You sense when someone’s upset, tense, or disappointed — even when nothing’s said. It’s as if your body reads the room before your mind does. And sometimes, those emotions seem to stay with you, like they’ve settled inside your chest.

This isn’t being “too sensitive.” It’s empathy — the ability to feel and understand others deeply. But when empathy has no boundaries, it becomes heavy. Your nervous system reacts as if everything you sense is yours: tension, fatigue, headaches, restlessness.

Many women have learned to take emotional responsibility early — for family, partners, friends. It makes you caring, but it can also blur the line between your emotions and everyone else’s.

Alma’s tips:

Empathy is a gift, but it needs grounding. Practice feeling with people, not for them.
When you notice your body tighten after being around someone struggling, take a moment for yourself. Breathe, stretch, and remind yourself: “This isn’t mine.”
You can care without carrying. Sometimes, the most loving thing you can do is to return to your own calm.
